What do we have available to us as Poison Control for our pets in North America? The Pet Poison Control is the answer and here is what it entails for you the owner. Yes there is a charge if you call but really, when your pet has been poisoned $39 is not a lot and it includes follow ups. And there's an app :)
Go to our Links we Like page for the link to Pet Poison Control.

"Pet Poison Helpline is the most cost-effective animal poison control center in North America charging only $39 per case, including unlimited follow-up consultations. Pet Poison Helpline also has an iPhone application called Pet Poison Help. This app includes an extensive database of over 200 poisons (with photos) dangerous to cats and dogs and is available on iTunes for $1.99."

Myself and Brenda :) at TNT Training

Yesterday I spent the day at a seminar lead by Brenda Aloff and wow, what a super lady. Real, down to earth and so helpful. I learned new techniques to help calm an excited dog, which of course is needed when assessing or treating an injured dog. Also some ideas to help Quincy in our walks down our street. Yup, due to my inexperience in handling the situation of walking by a few yards with dogs aggressively barking at her she has gradually become dog reactive, on this one stretch of our walk. Well now, thanks to Brenda we have some homework to do to overcome this, and we will :)

Today, it's Gail's turn to attend. Gail actually is the reason I had the fortune of meeting Brenda as she gave me her spot when she couldn't attend yesterday. Thanks Gail, you're a great friend.

Just what is kennel cough? Signs and Symptoms? Various Treatments? This is pretty good summary found in The Whole Dog Journal by CJ Puotinen.

Many people tsk at others for dressing up their dogs for the fun of it but ya know, it's not always for the fun of it. This little girl was diagnosed with a condition that causes her pupils to not react to the light and contract.
Therefore, the sun hurts her eyes. With her new doggles she can once again enjoy her outings.
Paws up to an attentive owner who recognized that something was wrong with her dog, sought the cause and is working around it.

West Coasties go home to the East Coast

This September was a trip home to Cape Breton and Quincy's second trip across country. A lot of prep work was involved to make all go smooth and it paid off. West Jet were great, they even now have a system where a tag is taken off the kennel and handed to me personally after Quincy's was boarded before we left the terminal. The anti-anxiety meds we tested worked great. The kennel fit in the rental. Thanks to networking on line we found a great park, Laurie's Prov Park, not far from the Halifax Airport for some exercise before the drive home.
Once home, smooth sailing. With the beach a 10 min bike ride from home, fantastic hikes and again more beaches not far, heaven. To anyone who asks if it was worth taking Quincy home with me, putting her on a plane, yes. Without a doubt it was worth it. For two eight hour trips where Quincy was not the happiest but not hysterical, we had two and a half weeks of enjoying each others company in a relaxed loving atmosphere, home.
I wish all humans and their canines could experience this kind of quality time.

K9ABCs first volunteer outing providing both canine and human first aid. Thank you my co-workers, (Amy Poll, Jennifer West & Karen Read) for being available  should the need arise. Karen was awesome, and suited up with the uniform and ambulance. Also, a big thank you to my cousin Patty, visiting from Ontario. Together we figured out the set up and tear down :)  It was an incredible day with a splinter being our only treatment, on a human.

Are you planning an event with dogs in attendance? Feel free to submit a request for K9ABCs to attend.

"I attended the March 06, 2021 K9ABCs first aid course run by Laurie. Excellent presentation of the material - Laurie is an amazing teacher combining the book material with personal experience both as a paramedic and as a dog lover. What stood out for me was the dog 'Annie': a rubber dog to practice all the handling skills needed for an emergency - CPR, assisted breathing, pulse check. Class was run in a highly professional manner with love an care for animals exuding at all times. All of it with COVID restrictions in place and well observed. Thank you Laurie, I'll be back for refreshers when time comes." Violeta Toma, 2021

"I took this course and it was so amazing! I highly recommend to anyone who has a dog!" Wagging Tails and Happy Trails, Dec. 8, 2019
