Note: Having your pets marked with a tattoo and/or a microchip is very important. Most of us don't leave collars on our pets when they are at home, but disasters can still happen that could leave our pets lost and we may not be able to be the ones to find them.
Great news! Although most of us heard about Buddy, the chocolate lab being found by his devastated family the other day. Apparently the same family also found their Aunts dog alive. Here's a link to a news report where they actually show footage of Buddy being found. http://www.kboi2.com/news/local/Family-dog-rescued-from-Wash-mudslide-rubble-252254221.html?tab=video&c=y

Living on the West Coast one hears a lot of talk about having Disaster Kits at the ready. In light of the horrific mud slide our neighbours to the south, in Washington, this last week I thought perhaps a reminder is due. Personally, having been a member of PEPP and SAR for many years in the past I do have enough equipment, food and essentials for both Quincy and I (and half the neighbourhood ) in our house, all in the garage. I have been worried about not having access to the garage in case of an earthquake, my house being a three level townhouse. Living in a strata also puts restraints on what I can keep in my back yard which is considered "common area". Well, today I've come up with my plan. I'll be building two 3'x3'x2' mini sheds and I'll be painting them to match the strata fencing. One will house my garbage can (which Strata also doesn't like outside) and the other my disaster kits (one for me and one for Quincy). Check out this site for the CanadianDisasterAnimalResponseTeam (CDART), they provide great information of how to be ready for evacuations and other emergencies with all your various animals. http://www.cdart.org/beprepared.htm Our Government of Canada webpage also has some great info for you http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/plns/ptsndsrvcnmls-eng.aspx So, let's all get of our keesters and get ready! Murphy's Law, if we're ready we won't need them. We can hope :) Does your dog enjoy running through the fields and the forest? Would you like the opportunity to expand your communication skills with your dog? Consider Agility training. Here in the Lower Mainland there are numerous agility groups one can join. If you or your dog are just beginning look for a club that has a good foundations class. Trust me, the wrong intro to an obstacle can have lasting adverse effects. Perhaps check out a trials competition, talk to the competitors from different clubs. Ask what it is they like about their clubs. Watch the competition for a while, yes, you and your dog can do it also. Quincy was four years old when we started agility, I remember the joy when we could do multiple obstacles in a row. Or, when we ran a full course with not one verbal prompt! Check it out. http://www.aac.ca/en/clubs/main/ So, in my spare time I also volunteer on the executive for the Westcoast Ride to Live. We raise funds for Prostate Cancer research here in B.C.. Every year at our ride I see a few riders with their four legged companions with them. I've seen small dogs, large dogs and even bunnies. These people love their animals and they are volunteering their time for a good cause, Prostate Cancer Research. Whether you ride or not, you can support the cause with a donation or by advertising. http://www.vancouver.ridetolive.ca/ We can only care for our pets properly if we take care of our own health.
